Only a week after Jim Furyk was disqualified for over sleeping his pro-am tee-time, the regulation has now been suspended.
For the rest of the year, any player missing his pro-am starting time will be subject to punishment under “conduct unbecoming a professional”, which means a fine, and players will be required to finish the pro-am or they are out of the tournament.
Phil Mickelson was the most outspoken last week, noting that the rule only applies to those players who were in the pro-am and not the rest of the field. “It’s ridiculous,” he said.
The question is why the tour chose to suspend the regulation after No. 3 Furyk was eliminated from the tournament. Players have been knocked out of tournaments seven times for missing a pro-am, but this is the first time it’s happened in the playoffs.
