Scores in the 50’s are becoming common place…Stuart Appleby shot 59 yesterday to win the Greenbrier Classic. Appleby became the fifth PGA Tour player to hit golf’s magic number. His score came less than a month after Paul Goydos had a 59 at the John Deere Classic.
Appleby is the first to reach 59 on a par-70 course; Goydos’ was par 71, and the three other 59s were on par 72s: Al Geiberger at Memphis, Chip Beck in Las Vegas and David Duval at the Bob Hope Classic.
And it gets better…Ryo Ishikawa won earlier this year with a 58 in the final round on the Japan PGA Tour and a teenager had a 57 last week at the Alabama State Jr. Championship.
